アメリカ留学 Studying Abroad in the U.S. (Okie Dokie's POV)

皆さんお久しぶりです、おきどきことユウトです。おきどきと、ときどきの二人とも学校の勉強が非常に忙しくなかなかブログを更新できていなかったので、楽しみに待っていた皆さんには申し訳ないです。二人とも学期が終わってある程度時間を確保できるようになったのでこれからは今まで以上にブログの更新頻度を高くしていきたいと思います。

おきどきは最近アメリカ留学から帰国してまた日本で生活しています。一年間という非常に長い時間をアメリカで過ごしたので、帰国するとやはり文化、食生活、社会の雰囲気など様々な違いに気づきますね。一年間という長い間アメリカにいたので、あたかもアメリカが自分の家のように感じていたので帰国間際になると非常に悲しく感じることが多くなりました。それに付き合っているときどきと離れるのは一番悲しかったです。お互い毎日一緒にジムに行ったり勉強していたのでそれができないと考えると胸が張り裂けそうな悲しさでした。ただお互いアメリカと日本という違う国で生活しているので離れて生活することになれないといけないということを考えると必要な時間だと思います。それに現代では無料のビデオ通話やチャットアプリなどがあるのでたとえ遠く離れた国でもリアルタイムでコミュニケーションをとれるのでそれほど深刻ではないと考えています。

今回の記事では自分のアメリカ留学に関することを書いていこうと思います。何個かに分けて書くつもりなので今回はなぜ自分がアメリカ留学に行こうと思ったのか、ということについて書いていきたいと思います。

もともと自分は6歳から英会話教室に通っていて、それが非常に好きだったし英語が比較的身近な存在でした。小学校と中学校の時は英語では常にトップの成績を取っていたので英語は自分の得意教科で好きなものでした。地方の進学校に進学してからは少し英語が嫌いになりました。というのは英語を勉強する理由がコミュニケーションではなく受験で高得点を取ってよりいい大学に進学するための手段のように扱われたので言語学習本来の楽しさを感じれなかったんです。それでも映画に出てくる自由で可能性に満ちたアメリカへ行きたい、という思いはずっと心の中にありました。その影響もあり大学は国際学部へと進学しました。正直なところを言うと、他大学の経済学部に入学することもできたのですが自分のやりたことを考えると国際学部が一番いいだろうと思いその選択をしました。

大学に入ってからは留学に向けての準備に尽力しました。夏休みにはTOEFL IBTテストに向けて集中的に勉強したのを覚えています。一番苦労したのはスピーキングとリスニングでした。中学や高校で勉強するのは文法や読解なのでこれらの練習をする機会がほとんどなかったのです。しかし対策講座や留学生との交流を通してそれらの練習をしたことで留学に必要なスコアを超えることはできました。

It's been awhile guys! It's Okie Dokie (Yuto)! Both Toki Doki and I have been very busy with school for the last couple of months, so we apologize to everyone who has been waiting for updates! Since the semester has officially ended and we now have more time, we plan to start posting much more frequently!

          Recently, I returned home (Japan) after studying abroad in the United States. After spending an entire year in the United States, I have definitely noticed a variety of differences between Japan and the U.S., such as the culture, diet and society. Having been in the United States for such a lengthy amount of time, I felt as if it had become my home, so I often felt very sad thinking about having to return to Japan. The hardest part was having to temporarily separate from Toki Doki, since we did so much together on a daily basis! The thought of having not being together was heartbreaking for me! Although sad, we both realize that temporary periods of separation are to be expected, considering that we currently live in two different countries. However, at least we have access to free video calling and messaging apps in the today's world, so we can continue to communicate in real time despite being located in different countries! Those luxuries make things a bit easier while we wait to reunite! Haha!

Now, I want to write a little about studying abroad to the United States. To begin, I would like to write about my reason for studying in the United States.

         I enrolled in my first English conversation class at the age of six, and I liked it very much! English was a language that seemed at least somewhat familiar to me, so I thought I could catch on pretty well! Whenever I was in elementary and junior high, I always had extremely high grades in English, which lead to it becoming my favorite subject. Since I went to a local, advanced high school, I was taught English in a I didn't particularly favor. The reason I studied English was to communicate with foreigners. At my high school, however, it was taught for the purpose of testing into higher ranking universities, so on many occasions, I was not able to experience the pure fun of learning the language. Still, the desire to go to land of potential mentioned in films I've watched - known as America - has been with me throughout my life. Because of that influence, once I entered college, I decided to go to the international department in my university. To be honest, I had the option to enter the economics department of better university, but I thought that the international department would be the best to fuel my ambitions, so I took that option.

          After I entered the university, I made an effort to prepare for studying abroad. I remember studying vigorously for the TOEFL IBT test during my summer vacation. The hardest part was speaking and listening. What I studied in junior high school and high school was grammar and reading comprehension, so I had few opportunities to practice those. However, by practicing them through different classes and conversations with foreign students, I knew I had a chance to reach the score required for studying abroad.
